Keeping Will County’s 1st Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit Connected at Silver Cross

Silver Cross Hospital in New Lenox recently opened Will County’s first and only Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), offering the community a level of convenience and care that has been lacking to its residents. The opening of the Amy, Matthew & Jay Vana Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at the campus allows high risk expectant mothers and critically ill babies to no longer have to travel for the advanced care they need. The 24-bed NICU is located on the third floor of the hospital’s new addition adjacent to the birthing center and features single-family private rooms. The NICU is modeled and staffed 24/7 by neonatologists from Ann & Robert Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago and will provide care for critically ill and premature newborns.

The NICU is equipped with machines and technology to help infants who may require breathing treatments, maintaining temperature/blood sugar, IV fluids, antibiotics for infection, monitoring heart rate/breathing/oxygen, support for congenital anomalies, prematurity and withdrawal. These life saving treatments and monitoring require the data and information to be communicated to the appropriate staff for intervention if needed. Whether it’s ordering proper medication from the pharmacy, entering chart information or answering a patient room call - that information is transmitted via the hospital’s network and requires seamless cabling infrastructure.

Low Voltage Solutions has been Silver Cross Hospital’s in-house technology contractor since the conception of the campus’ original data center. Our team has been alongside their IT and construction teams as they have expanded care offerings over the last decade. When the hospital came to LVS with their plans to add our community’s first Level III NICU, our team was eager to get their network designed and connected back the to the data center.

  • Designed and installed the NICU’s telecommunications room to connect devices to the network

  • Provided and installed the fiber backbone cabling to connect the new telecommunications room to the data center

  • Provided and installed the cabling in each 24-bed room for data connection of various medical devices & phones

  • Installed wireless access points to provide WiFi access for employees, patients and families

  • Installed Distributed Antenna System (DAS) to ensure connectivity with major cell phone providers for families to have uninterrupted communication with loved ones

  • Provided and Installed Viking Telecom Call Stations for increased security throughout NICU

  • Provided and Installed data locations for panic buttons for emergency use throughout NICU

  • Installed TV locations for each of the private single-family rooms

The Amy, Matthew & Jay Vana Neonatal Intensive Care Unit is now open and serving the advanced care critically ill babies and their families have needed in this community for years. Out of the 3200 babies born at Silver Cross last year, 50 had to be transferred to a Level III NICU in Chicago. The lives of so many Will County families will be positively impacted by the newest addition at the New Lenox campus. LVS is proud to be on the team to deliver on the continuous work Silver Cross and our community is doing to expand care for residents.

Low Voltage Solutions has 25 years of experience designing and installing the critical information technology systems needed for a hospital system to run and communicate efficiently. From new construction to in-house adds, moves and changes, LVS will work with hospitals systems and construction teams to ensure a seamless delivery in the low voltage systems.
